I was born on August 6, 1946. My full name is Marshall Dean Hannotte. My Catholic name is Marshall Dean Michael Philip Hannotte. Frank Hannotte (1911-1977) was my father. He used to joke that he came up with the name "Marshall Dean" because he thought I would either become a leader of men (a marshall) or a teacher of knowledge (a dean). Frank's parents were Belgian and English. When he was about 10, Frank's father was killed in a subway crash. Frank wanted to be an actor, but became the advertising manager of the Bronx Press Review, a local newspaper. At the end of his life he appeared in a few amateur stage plays. Al Remmler was my father's stepfather. The relatives on my father's side are cold and disciplinary.

Victoria ("Vicki") Santora (1919-2004) was my mother. Her parents were Italian. When she was about 10, Vicki's father died of tuberculosis. Vicki was occasionally a dental assistant. Santora was her maiden name. Nana Santora was her mother. Vicki's brothers included Jimmy, Mike and Rocco. Her sisters included Mary, Jean, Yoli, Olga and Nettie, who committed suicide in her 20's when she learned that a man she had fallen in love with was married. Rocco married Margie Smith, who died of cancer in her 50's, after which Rocco committed suicide. Jimmy's kids included Jim, Gary, Janet and Donna. As far as I know, Jim is my only gay relative. Loren is Gary's daughter. Mike had a son named Mark. Gabe DiPillo (1908-) was my mother's uncle, but much younger than her father. Catherine (1946-) was Gabe's daughter. Catherine and I have stayed in contact through the years. The relatives on my mother's side are warm, especially towards children.

Gail Patricia (1950-2008) was my sister. She married Francois Guillet, a French immigrant, and gave up her desire to help deaf children to help run his marina. Their children were Danielle (1978-) and Pierre (1991-).
