Over the decades I have slowly built up a collection of paleontological art consisting of

In each entry of the following catalog, the column labeled Item Identifier begins with the initials of the artist's name and ends with a 3-digit serial number. In the case of Charles Knight, the three digits include a digit specifying the portfolio used to store that item, and the location of the item within that portfolio. Thus, ck304 identifies the fourth item in portfolio 3 of the Charles R. Knight collection. Portfolio 8 refers to free-standing items not stored as a group.

In the column labeled Description, any text in quotes actually appears somewhere on the item itself. Information about the media appears in parentheses; information about anything on the reverse side appears after a semicolon. The keyword "see-thru" means that a sketch of an animal shows its skeleton as well as the flesh covering it.

The ck1xx series is kept in an 8.5" X 11" loose-leaf binder.

Late in his life, Charles Knight's daughter, Lucy Steele — a personal friend of mine — got him to autograph many small works. These are marked "Chas R. Knight" in upper case letters. Occasionally an encircled "R" appears underneath this autograph. In a few cases, Lucy herself wrote "Charles R. Knight" in florid script.
