Sadly, they're not. And leaving the politics of a nation up to just anybody who's popular is like leaving the practice of medicine up to a free market. Doctors go through important, if always imperfect, medical education, training and licensing. They decide the treatment options, not their patients.

In a thousand years we will have professional politics rather than the amateur fistfights and street brawls we see today. Politicians, like doctors today, will be well paid, highly educated and probably licensed. Instead of the science of medicine, however, they will be taught the science of human nature.
