About this person:

Clarke studied law before joining the New Model Army as an assistant to the Secretary of the General. He participated in the invasion of Scotland and served as secretary of the Army of Occupation of Scotland. After the Restoration of the monarchy he was knighted and served as Secretary at War in 1661. He was mortally wounded in a sea battle against the Dutch in 1666.
